Abstract

This paper describes various preparations that were made for the extensive programme of rehabilitation work for the 300 km pavement of the A1 motorway between Vienna and Salzburg in Austria. The existing pavement had been subjected to traffic for more than 20 years, and was cracked and seated and overlaid with asphaltic concrete. In 1988, a 7 km section was selected for measurements and performance evaluations during reconstruction. Falling weight deflectometer (FWD) and Lacroix deflectograph measurements were made on the pavement section, and material tests were performed both in the laboratory and on the construction site. It was recommended that cracking and seating should be executed in the following cases: (1) E-modulus of the concrete less than 30000 MPa; (2) poor support conditions at the joints; (3) poor load transfer and faulting at the joints. A basic rehabilitation, consisting of grouting and placing extra dowels in the joints and cracks, could be justified only with a limited number of cracks and joints with a poor load transfer and in the absence of faulting. Design proposals were made, based on stress and strain analysis, for which elastic layer moduli were used as input assessed from FWD measurements. (TRRL)
