TRANSIT ITS AND THE U.S. APTS PROGRAM

The Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS) program is part of the Department of Transportation (DOT) Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) initiative. ITS is an expanding intermodal effort to improve the efficiency, safety, and productivity of the nation's surface transportation network through the use of advanced electronic, computer, and communications technologies. Accordingly, the intent of the APTS program is not only to support the goals of ITS, but also to enhance the ability of public transportation systems to satisfy customer needs and contribute to community goals. The paper provides information on the APTS program objectives, components and output highlights. It also discusses the partnership approach, with information on supporting institutions, other federal agencies as well as non-federal government agencies, and non-government organizations and professional societies..
