Abstract
The high complexity of todays ship installations, and the qualifications and expertise required to operate them require a continuous adaptation of crews to meet the demands. Also, high managing costs leads operators to reduce ship crews to a minimum. A structured method to evaluate a ship's crew size was developed, to ascertain the smallest crew for effective operation. The layout of the ship and her systems, the workload, and the service characteristics were considered as factors that will govern the size of the crew. In order to test the method, a case study was carried out for two container vessels.
