Abstract

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) is developing one of the largest public works projects in American history. Over the next 30 years, a $168 billion, state-of-the-art public transportation system will unfold in a region that desperately needs the upgrade. One new component of the LACMTA that will help lead the way to an improved transportation system through the use of new technology and jurisdictional consensus-building is the Signal Support Group (SSG). The group is responsible for developing and promoting multi-jurisdictional traffic-signal synchronization and coordination projects throughout Los Angeles County. This paper characterizes the experience of developing a program that produces multijurisdictional traffic-signal-synchronization projects.
