Abstract
This brief article reviews the results of revised requirements for the use of the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane on the Massachusetts I-93 Southeast Expressway. Since the initial HOV lane was introduced in November 1995 volume in the lane has risen steadily. Since four thousand commuters were issued 2-person carpool stickers, use of the lane has increased significantly. Commuters report that they can now travel 10 mph (16 kph) faster than before the lane was opened. The limited 2-person sticker program has been successful because it increased lane use without creating congestion.
