Abstract
This article considers various aspects of the problem of conjoining thermal preparation of coals and blends with high-speed carbonization in an experimental 300-kg oven fabricated from a corundum refractory. The coals and blends were preheated in an experimental ascending-flow apparatus with a throughout of 1 t/h. Thermal preparation of blends for carbonization is one of the most important processes currently being investigated for improvement of the technical economic indices of bed-type carbonization. In addition to a significant increase in coke-oven throughput (by 40% or more), this technique results in improvement of the physicomechanical properties of blast-furnace coke and considerable expansion of the raw-material base for carbonization, since larger amounts (up to 50% or more) of poor-caking low-rank gas coals can be used in the blend. It must be noted, however, that wide use of thermal charge preparation is being delayed by the need to solve certain technical problems related to methods for charging coke ovens with preheated coals.
