STRIVING FOR SUPERIORITY OF UNCLE TOMIN HARRIET BEECHER STOWE’S UNCLE TOM’S CABIN: AN INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACH

The major problem of this study is how the striving for superiority of slave is reflected in Harriet Beecher Stowe. Meanwhile, this problem is limited on the major character, especially Uncle Tom. In addition, the writer also limits the perspective on the Adler’s theory. The objective of this study is to analyze the novel based on its structural elements, and evaluated on the individual Psychological Approach. This research paper belongs to qualitative study that uses two data sources, primary data source and secondary data source. Primary data source is the novel it self and the secondary data source is taken from different references that include the books and articles from the internet related to analysis is descriptive analysis. The outcome of the study shows the following conclusion. First, the study shows that Mrs. Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin represents her response to the middle of nineteenth century American society, particularly the problem of the needs of the dusky skin people taken as slave by white. Second, Mrs. Stowe creates the major character who wants to assert that slave is a human being and he also wants to be happy in his live and free as a human being. Uncle Tom’s Cabin describes the striving for superiority of Uncle Tom when Tom is consistently trying to improve him self in his limitation as a slave.
