Abstract

The ion source was constructed with the aim of using it in a fast neutron generator. The deuterons extracted from the source are focused and accelerated up to 250 kev in an accelerating tube, and then fall on a tritium target to generate fast neutrons due to the d + t reaction. The requirements to be fulfilled by a fast neutron generator ion source are as follows: large beam current, low gas consumption, large relative content of atomic ions and low power consumption. Generally, these requirements are fulfilled very well by an ion source in which the gas ionization is carried out by means of a high-frequency electromagnetic field owing to ring discharges in the quartz chamber. In these ion sources the most adequate ion beam extraction system is the Thoneman type canal-ray arrangement. Therefore an ion source of this type was developed, and the construction is the most successful one of several solutions tested previously. (auth)
