Abstract
This paper describes the computer models developed by the Transport Energy Research Group, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Melbourne for predicting the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of vehicles driven in traffic. Two programs have been developed, one for manual transmission vehicles and one for automatic transmission vehicles. The underlying assumptions of these programs are detailed and the overall consequential errors are estimated. The validation of some of the program predictions is presented, and some examples are given of the use of this program in evaluating the effect of vehicle design changes over a range of driving cycles (a).
