Abstract

This article describes the type of electronic fuel injection that will be required to refine automobile diesel engine performance in the next several years, as more stringent diesel emission standards evolve. The seven fundamental characteristics of a diesel engine fuel injection system are currently satisfied by a variety of system mechanics with the controls integrated into a centralized distributor type of injection pump. However, injection timing, fuel quantity metering, idle and maximum rpm control, and maximum fuel limit are well suited to electronic control of a closed loop design that will provide feedback measurements of fuel quantity and injection timing. The introduction of microprocessor control can also lead to the addition of secondary systems or functions at minimal cost. In the case of electronic diesel controls, typical examples would include cruise control, diagnostics, display functions and transmission control.
