Abstract

This article focuses on concrete overlays and how they can be a cost- effective method for adding structural capacity and pavement reconditioning. It first discusses unbonded overlays, which involve concrete over concrete, with a thin asphalt layer in between. The advantages obtained from using an asphalt separation layer, as well as those derived from the new concrete layer, are described. A second overlay strategy that is discussed is whitetopping, which involves laying fiber-reinforced over asphalt. The article concludes with a discussion of asphalt repairs and utility cuts in asphalt pavements.
