MOST HIGHWAY PAVEMENT MARKINGS IN USE TODAY ARE NONSIGNIFICANT OR UNINFORMATIVE TO THE DRIVER. HOWEVER, SINCE DRIVERS GIVE FIRST ATTENTION TO THE ROAD AND ONLY AFTERWARDS EXAMINE SIGNS, CONSIDERATION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO ADOPTING A SIGNIFCANT, STANDARDIZED SYSTEM OF ROAD MARKING. SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE FOR USING PAVEMENT MARKINGS TO CONVEY INFORMATION ABOUT TRAFFIC DIRECTIONALITY AND PAVEMENT EDGES. BECAUSE MARKINGS OCCUR MORE OFTEN THAN SIGNS, THEY ARE A MORE CONSTANT REMINDER OF ROAD CONDITIONS, BUT BECAUSE THEY CAN EASILY BE OBSURED OR COVERED THEY MUST BE CONSIDERED ONLY SUPPLEMENTAL TO SIGNS.
