Abstract
As urban areas are developing, the road network is being modernised with high-capacity highways where speed is limited to more than 60 km/h by means of traffic signs. It is suggested that speed limits should be decreased from 60 to 50 km/h in urban areas, but this would have harmful consequences. The influence of speed on traffic safety is unjustly overestimated, while the importance of other factors in the complex driver-vehicle-environment system on traffic safety in urban areas is neglected.
