DISCUSSION 453producing lower depths of overflow and low values of pore pressure, an evaluation of the effect of varying a and n as described in Eq.21, compared to using geometricall y determined average values, would be of interest.A further aspect of importance in selecting methods of analyzing the flow is the calculation time, particularly in view of the combinations of through and overflow which occur and also the successive approximatio ns description of turbulent seepage.The simplificatio ns resulting from the use of an exponential description of behavior are reduced when the coefficients are allowed to vary.Recent work at the University of Melbourne, (1) in which the basic method of finite elements has been extended and applied to the turbulent flow field, has resulted in significant savings in calculation time.The fuller definition of flow behavior will depend also on the proper assessment of overflow profiles, combining the turbulent seepage and overflow equations to account for the interchange of water between overtopped bank and the overflowing stream.
