Abstract

Discussions have been continuing with regard to the new concept of a ship's operating officer. Among some of the shipowners the introduction of a ship operating officer is seen as a way to cut costs and personnel. Among the ship engineers and nautical people the reaction is negative. The authors carefully analyze the many responsibilities on board ship and come to the conclusion that the new concept of a ship's operating officer for the ship of the future, is not really valid.
