Abstract
The objectives of this paper are: To document the extent to which a pavement overlay can be expected to improve ride quality; to determine what ride quality requirements to incorporate in pavement overlay contracts; and, to document the effects of horizontal and vertical alignment, number of overlay lifts, and the existing ride quality on final ride quality. Data were obtained in tenth-mile increments from the following two types of projects: one or more lifts of asphalt concrete placed over an existing bituminous pavement, and one or more lifts of asphalt concrete placed over a cold recycled bituminous pavement.
