Deficit irrigation techniques in potato growing: practical application of stress physiology knowledge.

Abstract

Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) and partial root drying (PRD) are methods based on stress physiology knowledge. Here their effects on potato yield (Y) and water use efficiency (WUE) in the field grown potato was presented. PRDI and PRD plants were irrigated by 70% water of full irrigation (FI) during almost all season although in the last 3 weeks the amount of water in RDI and PRD was reduced to 50%. At harvest, the effects of RDI, PRD and FI on total (Y) marketable yield (MY) and WUE was measured. These results showed that comparing to FI, the similar effects of RDI and PRD were obtained on Y (slight reduction) and WUE (increase), although MY was similar in PRD and FI plants.
