Abstract

This article gives an overview of the increasing use of smart cards for automatic fare collection. It describes the advantages of electronic smart cards over magnetic stripe cards. The multi- applications capability of smart cards is discussed, as is the potential future partnership between financial card issuers that use contact chips and the transit industry which favors the contactless technology.
