Abstract
In 1985, a new pavement design guide was finalized in the United States for use by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). This paper summarizes the details of the asphalt design procedure presented in the AASHTO Pavement Design Guides and summarizes the outline of overlay design procedure presented in those Guides. Finally, it discusses the pavement management concepts and the mechanistic pavement design concept which are presented in the Guide. These Design Guides are based on the AASHO Road Test and subsequent findings of pavement performance in the United States between 1962 and 1985. This paper is an introduction and broad background to the AASHTO Guides. This paper describes the key changes in the Guides and describes the relationship of these changes to a proposed National Pavement Testing Program. The pavement testing program considers methods to: (1) evaluate and develop alternate pavement rehabilitation and construction techniques; (2) evaluate and develop predictive equations for pavement design and rehabilitation; (3) conduct special studies such as cost allocation, vehicle weight effects, and environmental effects; and (4) support project and network pavement management activities.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828827.
