Abstract

The article describes a Department of Transportation draft safety Action Plan for Short-Term Accident Countermeasures. The Plan contains recommendations for federal and local governments and private organizations concerned with traffic safety. The recommendations focus on 5 areas: pedestrian safety; driver behavior and performance; roadway and roadside safety; commercial motor vehicle safety; and corridor safety improvement. These recommendations emphasize interdisciplinary cooperation among professionals and public officials; and comprehensive management practices. The recommendations are discussed in some detail. Safety recommendations issued by the National Transportation Safety Board are discsussed as well as its New Car Assessment Program. Comments are made on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's child safety seat recall.
