Abstract
The history of expressways in Japan began with a plan for a total length of 3,730 km in 1957. In 1963 a 71 km long section of the Meishin Expressway was the first to be opened to traffic. Since then the total length of expressway in service has steadily increased along with the rapid growth in number and travel of automobiles in Japan, and it now amounts to about 4,400 km, as of July 1989. Over this same period, the total planned length of expressways has increased to 14,000 km. This paper describes construction of the 74 km long mountainous section between the Joetsu interchange (I.C.) and the Asahi I.C. on the Hokuriku expressway, the last section of this route to be opened. Although constructed with two lanes, it is planned to widen the expressway to four lanes when traffic volume demands. Details are included of the tunnels and bridges required as part of this section.
