Abstract

The method of approach involved in applying mathematical analysis and simulation techniques to the design of propulsion systems is identified by the evaluation of a specialised vessel concept. The system design of a diesel-powered vessel utilising both direct drive via a conventional gearbox together with a variable speed system based upon a hydraulic drive assembly is detailed. The effect of certain parameters on ship performance is highlighted in derived data, particularly in respect to crash back manoeuvres. The results are used to define the requirements involved in a shore test facility capable of presenting the propulsion plant with load spectra comparable with that expected when undergoing a range of selected manoeuvres at sea. Details of this design procedure are included. Order from NSFI as No. 19567.
