GEOTEXTILES: A SOLUTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING PROBLEMS

Abstract

This paper aims to provide the non-expert with some insight into the nature of geotextiles and the role they can play in developing cost- effective solutions to civil engineering challenges. The physical properties of various types of geotextile are outlined and examples given of their use. Used particularly for stabilising slopes and bridging soft spots, applications have also included replacement of base material, use as a drainage layer and protection in the area of chemical storage tanks. Other materials having a similar function including geogrids and composite soil are noted. Details are given about extensive research now being carried out in the field of geotextiles, international conferences and a journal on the subject.
