Abstract

National efforts are underway to develop an agenda for transportation research that has broad support. One aspect of this effort focuses on research in the area of transportation operations. This paper is intended as a starting point to begin to advance discussions in this area. The paper discusses the problem in general terms, briefly overviews the nature and extent of ongoing work in the transportation operations area, presents some alternative approaches for describing research in this area, and presents a strawman approach for developing a national research agenda.
