Abstract

The importance of the national highway system extends beyond the efficient transportation of goods and services to the very quality of life enjoyed in the U.S. today, according to a speech made by National Asphalt Pavement Association's Second Vice Chairman Charles F. Potts. Among the visions for the future would be specialized portions of the highway system for heavier freight and self-financed truck-only lanes; and increased funding for research and development to improve the safety, durability, cost-effectiveness and environmental soundness of the highway system.
