Application of the virial theorem to clusters of galaxies with unseen mass

Jr. Smith H.

Open publisher page 15 citations

Abstract

Application of the virial theorem to N-body systems with various distributions of unseen mass and a reasonable set of initial conditions gives mass values that are overestimates, both for cylindrical samples and for the entire system. The overestimation in the latter case is as much as a factor 3.5-4 and is implicit in earlier work by Limber.
