Abstract
This paper begins with a brief historical review of notable arch bridges. These bridges were used for long spans before the introduction of prestressed concrete and segmental methods, which are the main subject of this paper. The majority of structures built segmentally have been box girder bridges, covering a large range of span lengths with many different shapes and functions. Following a look at some noteworthy box girder bridges, attention is focused on more specific areas such as long-span bridges, bridges over large bodies of water, structures built in environmentally sensitive areas, urban viaducts, and concrete cable-stayed bridges.
