Abstract
The relation between terrestrial magnetic variations and variations in the interplanetary magnetic field of solar origin is considered. In particular, a detailed analysis is made of the relation between the variation in the interplanetary magnetic field and variations of the geomagnetic field in polar regions. Among the topics discussed are field variations in the polar cap in relation to the sector structure of the interplanetary magnetic field, the dominant direction of the interplanetary magnetic field, and the current system induced by the interplanetary magnetic field and responsible for the observed geomagnetic field variations. Also analyses are made of the relation between the interplanetary magnetic field and magnetospheric substorms and of the relation between the interplanetary magnetic field and DP2 type terrestrial variations of the geomagnetic field.
