TRAVEL CHARACTERISTICS OBTAINED IN 1977 NATIONWIDE PERSONAL TRANSPORTATION STUDY (NPTS) VOLUME I: SURVEY SUMMARY

Abstract

The 1977 National Personal Transportation Survey (NPTS) was sponsored by the Department of Transportation and was conducted by the Bureau of the Census through personal interviews with almost 18,000 households. The NPTS obtained data on all trips and travel in the U.S. over a specified period, and on the social and economic characteristics of the person making the trip. The emphasis of this report is to extract information regarding exposure to motor vehicle accidents and therefore focuses on travel involving such vehicles and not on travel by plane or train. The objectives of this report are: to convey a methodology for using the NPTS data tapes to accident researchers; to provide a qualitative description of the travel characteristics measured; and to display a descriptive summary of several exposure measures and their relation to households, vehicles and drivers.
