Abstract

Transportation is a major social force. It has made possible a universal personal mobility that is transforming society. It has created a global market for industries, increased production efficiency and raising standards of living. Transportation is the foundation of great industries supplying its vehicles, facilities, and raw materials. It is a basis for great challenge in public administration because of its requirements for highways, airways, waterways, and good transportation. For these reasons the U.S. Department of Transportation was created. The new department brings together in one place most of the government's major promotional responsibilities in transportation. It is the focal point for developing a system suited to accomplishing our transportation objectives while at the same time recognizing the necessary relationship of transportation to other social and economic objectives.
