A Design Method of Horizontal Curve Based on Speeds

Abstract

Regarding individual design elements currently adopted to geometric design in Korea, existing standards have been established with consideration of vehicle and driver's characteristics. However, all the standards does not appear to consider carefully the relationship between design elements and their consistencies. As a result, current highway design standards do not satisfy all the subjects related to highway safety and consistency problem. To improve current horizontal alignment design procedure, this study provides an advanced horizontal alignment design method based on speed in curves. This study suggests 'Preliminary model for estimates of speed on curves' representing driver's characteristics more accurately. Based on this model, a 'relational design diagram' which can be applied to rural highway design is provided.
