Abstract
Highway transportation department worker deaths and injuries are a national epidemic in work zones in the U.S. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, speeding is a contributing factor in 30% of all accidents and fatalities. With the proper devices, traffic speed can be reduced the entire length of work zones. This is especially important since 53% of all work-zone accidents occur downstream of the lane closure. This article describes efforts to reduce work zone injuries and fatalities in the U.S. by using radar trailer safety devices to warn motorists well in advance if they are driving at excessive speeds and thereby reduce driving speeds well before the vehicle reaches the work zone. Statistical data and anecdotal evidence showing the success of these units is presented.
