Abstract

Experiments were conducted in a range of fully developed turbulent flows of mercury in a rectangular duct in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Friction coefficients expressing the effect of the magnetic field on the flow were derived, covering the Reynolds number range from 7.7 x 10/sup 4/ to 4.0 x 10/ sup 5/ and the Hartmann number range from 0 to 73. Previously reported results up to a Reynolds number of 1.2 x 10/sup 5/ agree with the present values. At higher Reynolds numbers, the present data show a strong monotomic increase of the skin friction coefficient for a given Reynolds number and increasing magnetic fields in variance with the minimum C/sub f/'' observed at lower Reynolds numbers. The present data, therefore, invalidate theoretical predictions based on such a minimum. (auth)
