For t h e past 4 years our group has been working along w i t h .the Argonne ZGS s t a f f on a project to(&celerate a beam of p o l a r i x d / protons and s c a t t e r them f-a polarized proton t a r g g acceleration process is described i n d e t a i l i n Khoe & &.I; and our: experiments using the polarized bean and a polarized target t o measure the t o t a l and e l a s t i c cross sections are described in some d e t a i l in Parket s .' and OqPallon s.3 My collaborator.l i s t e d in these references deserve great c r e d i t for the success of t h i s project .describe the acceleration p r o c e a g The polarized beam s t a r t s a t 20 KeV i n a ground s t a t e atomic bean type polarized source purchased i n New zealand.This source is i n the new Preaccelerator I1 dme shown i n Fig. 1 which accelerates the polarized beam t o 750 KeV.The beam is then injected into the LINAC which accelerates it t o 50 M e V where its polarization is monitored using a 50 MeV p C e l a s t i c scattering polarimeter.The beam is thein injected i n t o t h e U;S Where it has been accelerated up t o 8.5 W / c , *presented a t the XXt h Rencontre de Moriond, Heribel, France 4 March 1914 t ~o r k suppostad by a research grant fram the U.SI Ataaic Energy Caaaission.without significant lose of polarization.TO maintain the polarization one must quickly pass thru some "depoLarizing
