The 1-MJ aluminum coil designed and fabricated by the National Bureau of Standards, Boulder, Colorado, has been tested at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory when warm and when immersed in liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen. The coil was energized by a 10-kV, 100-kJ capacitor bank that was crowbarred at the first current maximum. This report describes the coil, cryogenic system, and charging network and demonstrates the feasibility of using a pulsed magnetic energy storage coil immersed in liquid hydrogen.Test results are included.
