Abstract
A space system for measuring tropical rainfall and its variations is described, and its tasks are outlined. TRMM instrumentation is covered, including a cross-track scanning multichannel passive microwave radiometer, precipitation radar, and high-resolution radiometer. A circular orbit giving intensive coverage in the tropics is analyzed. TRMM rain retrievals and validation are discussed, along with algorithms calculating rain amounts and vertical profiles.
