Abstract

Due to the high cost of constructing new power plants, today's utility management must make decisions regarding life extension and modernization of mature generating equipment. One of the important decisions to be made is whether to implement basic life extension on turbine-generators or to go a step further and modernize. Turbine-generators with service lives greater than 25-30 years are expected to develop specific reliability concerns such as high temperature rotor material degradation. Modern technology allows for the performance of life evaluations on critical components to predict remaining life and avoid potential forced outages.
