Abstract

Total wind load on the deck of a bridge can be divided into three parts:mean wind load, background fluctuation wind load and inertia wind load. Wind-induced acceleration of bridges can be used to calculate the inertial wind load. In this paper a new simple formula for calculating the wind-induced lateral acceleration of bridges is introduced, which is based on the general scheme of Scanlan's formulation, taking the aerodynamic admittance into consideration. A simple formula based on D'Alembert's Principle for computing wind-induced inertia wind load of bridges is also developed herein. Parametric analyses are caried out to show the characteristic of wind-induced acceleration and inertial wind load. The numerical examples at the end of the present paper illustrate the simplicity of application and the precision of the results involved by this method, highlighting its predisposition to rapid manual engineering calculations and standards applications.
