Abstract

It has always been important for transit dispatchers to know where the transit authority's vehicles are at any given time. In the past, this has been accomplished by having supervisors or drivers themselves physically report their positions. Recently, Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) has become a popular choice, and many transit authorities across the country are starting to consider using AVL to manage their vehicles. New developments to AVL technology have increased its uses from vehicle location, data communications, and computer-aided dispatch, to include monitoring capabilities for engines and ADA equipment and controls for other systems such as counting, collection, and PA systems.
