Abstract
Details are given of the Friarton Bridge, Perth, to be opened in September 1978. The opening is over a year behind schedule. Reasons for the delay are said to be unexpected ground conditions, bad weather, strikes, and late steel deliveries. The main river span of the 831 M bridge is 174 M long - flanked on each side by anchor spans of 114 M with 4 remaining spans of 75 M, plus one 66 M span at the north abutment and one 63 M span at the south. The superstructure consists of 2 independent steel box girders each supporting a lightweight reinforced concrete road deck separated by a 100 mm gap. Design problems were greatly simplified by dividing the deck along the centre of the median and effectively building 2 side by side box girder bridges. /TRRL/
