IMPROVING PEDESTRIAN SAFETY AT SCHOOL CROSSWALKS

Abstract
In Maryland, crosswalks exist at every intersection of two streets. The crosswalks may be marked or unmarked. Generally, school crosswalks are marked and may have special traffic control devices such as crossing guards or traffic signals to separate the flows between pedestrians and vehicles. Howard County, Maryland has developed a program to improve traffic safety at school crosswalks throughout the County. It is a multi-part program designed to improve driver awareness of school crosswalks and to make the pedestrian more visible. Traffic calming has special application in residential areas near school crosswalks where devices can be used to both slow traffic and improve pedestrian visibility. This paper discusses the road markings, traffic control devices and traffic calming schemes implemented in order to increase the safety of school children.
