Abstract

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) hold out great promise for meeting many of our transportation needs; less congestion, improved safety and security, and much more. Beyond those fundamental requirements is the need to determine how these enhanced transportation services can enrich the lives and opportunities of all citizens. The author contends that if enough communities employed ITS to enable more efficient use of their transportation resources, the markets for new technologies would be sufficient to reduce the cost to more affordable levels. A half-dozen specific areas of societal need are identified.
