Abstract

The new marshalling yard at Kitakami was built to replace the old freight yards at Kitakami and Morioka, which were blocking the construction of the new Tohoku Shinkansen line, and in order to combine the operations of marshalling yards in the area. The new yard was opened in October 1978: its operation is computer-controlled, which enables it to handle 1700 wagons a day. The article explains the function of the new yard and provides a survey of its equipment.
