Abstract

Article discusses an amendment to the Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1982 (STAA) which would allow greater access to state roads by wide trailers. It would also provide access to all terminals which the bill defines as any facility where freight is loaded or unloaded or where these vehicles are manufactured or regularly maintained. The article presents testimony from representatives of the following organizations: Office of Motor Carriers at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA); Regular Common Carrier Conference (RCCC); American Trucking Associations (ATA); private truckload carriers; New Jersey Department of Transportation; Alabama Highway Department; Florida Department of Transportation; General Mills and James River Corporation.
