Abstract

This study investigates the influence of asphalt concrete overlays on the curling and warping of concrete pavement slabs, particularly in response to temperature effects. Conducted at Paris airports, the research addresses the failure of plain concrete pavements due to underestimation of temperature impacts, leading to premature cracking and deformation. The study explores whether asphalt overlays act as thermal shields, thereby mitigating temperature variations and altering slab curling and warping. Experimental data from Orly airport, analyzed using the finite element program Cesar-Lcpc, indicates that medium-thickness asphalt overlays can significantly reduce warping effects compared to non-overlaid slabs. Initial findings suggest that such overlays not only improve the temperature resilience of concrete pavements but also have implications for pavement design and rehabilitation strategies.
