DEVELOPMENT OF A PUBLIC TRANSIT INFORMATION SYSTEM: USE OF GIS AND ITS TECHNOLOGIES

Open publisher page 1 citations

Abstract

This paper describes the development of a transit information system that enables the identification of an optimal route and provides the corresponding travel time estimate while accounting for the uncertainty in schedule adherence. Data from the Ottowa-Carleton Regional Transit Commission (OC Transpo) and the City of Ottawa were used to develop the transit information system. The algorithm for route planning takes into account transit vehicle operational characteristics. Bayesian statistical methodology and a link to the transit agency's on-line data file are used to address the uncertainty in schedule adherence. A Geographic Information System (GIS) software program is used to implement the system. Trip planning is the main feature of the transit information system.
