Abstract
Four groups of materials were examined: carbon steel, low-alloy steel, cast iron, and stainless chromium steel. The effect of various factors of the course and kinetics of cavitational destruction was analysed and an erosion-rate equation was developed; this allows quantitative elucidation of the effect of aggressive environmental conditions on the development of corrosion. The presumed mechanism in the formation of cracks in the superficial layer of carbon (or low-alloy) steel caused by water-impact pressure is presented. The role played by alloys in increasing corrosion resistance in sea water is described. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,915.
