Abstract
The London Bus Initiative (LBI) was designed to improve congestion and reduce the numbers of cars on the road. The programme is being managed by Oscar Faber. The first phase saw 27 strategic bus routes selected for improvement. The improvements are implemented along the whole route, regardless of borough boundaries. This involves cooperation between transport authorities, borough councils, bus operators and the police. Whole route implementation plans identify a package of measures needed to improve the service and encourage more people to use the bus. The measures include the introduction of new modern buses, improved waiting conditions, clearer timetables and information systems, redesigned pavements for low-floor buses, driver training, vehicle-responsive traffic signals and bus lanes. In the second phase, the scheme will be extended to a further 42 routes.
