Abstract

This article examines the development and future plans for rail services in Hong Kong. Increasing population fuels an increase in transport use, and the Kowloon-Canton Rail Corp (KCRC) and Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corp provide long distance and local rail services with new lines and stations under construction. The West Rail line built by KCRC links the territory to the mainland and the new towns, with interchanges to other transport modes. The KCRC East Rail extension included construction of a major underground station at Tsim Sha Tsui, and the Ma On Shan line through residential areas, most of which is on viaduct and which needed strict noise control technology. Extensive tunnel works were necessary for the Lok Ma Chau spur line, with further parts on viaduct. The KCRC and MTR companies have started merger talks which may lead to reduced government financial assistance and further extension of planned projects.
