Abstract
Shopping centers and other retail developments are critical in terms of growth management and congestion relief. Consequently, it is important to have complete and accurate data to assess the impacts of these developments. The investigator studied several aspects of trip generation of shopping centers, including: 1) the relationship between trip generation and a combination of several independent variables; 2) the definition and classification of shopping centers used by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE); 3) the effects of age of data in the ITE trip generation database; and 4) the relationship between pass-by trips and a combination of several independent variables. Several recommendations are made as a result of the study: 1) additional data should be collected to expand the ITE database; 2) data should be collected for additional independent variables for both trip generation and pass-by trips; and 3) the study methodology and procedures of this analysis could be applied to other land uses that may benefit from multivariable analysis.
